100 Million Trade Marks Registered and Counting.
TMView, the EU’s interactive search platform, reported in December that they now hold over 100 million trade marks publicly available within the search tool.
TMView is a multi jurisdictional Trademark search tool operated by the EU Intellectual Property Office, previously known as OHIM (Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market). TMView collaborates with 72 other IP offices globally tocompile its databse. It contains the trade mark applications and registered marks from all EU national IP offices, the EUIPO and a number of international partner offices outside the EU.
The search tool provides invaluable transparency for companies looking to protect their IP and decide upon brand names.
It Shows the Importance of Registering your Trademarks
The sheer number of registered marks is a clear sign to businesses of the importance to protect their goods and services through the use of trade marks.
With the increase of platforms on which to sell goods and services, it is inevtiable that the number of brands coming into existence will continue to increase at a faster pace than before. Entry to market is now much lower as anybody with a computer and an internet connection has the potential to sell to a global marketplace at their fingertips.
On the flip side, the number of infringements will also increase and it is more important than ever that brands ensure they have protected their IP properly and in the right territories so that they can prevent infrignement and maintain their competitive advantage, which in turn will form the base an investment in the IP as a valuable asset itself.
Whether you are starting out or an established brand investing in product lines that are gaining traction, it is crucial to register your trademarks so that you have recourse against future would-be infringers and can increase the value of your IP goodwill and assets.
