UKIPO official fees start at £205 for one class plus £60 for each additional class (the fees rose on 1 April 2026). Our fee for a UK application is £375 plus VAT for a word mark or a figurative mark, or £550 for the two combined, plus £50 for each additional class; an advisory search before you apply is £270 plus VAT (plus £50 a class). An EU application is £850 (£1,200 combined) and an EU advisory search £399, plus £50 a class. Official fees are payable in addition.

Around four months if no one objects. The UKIPO examines within a few weeks, then publishes the mark for a two-month opposition period. If there's no opposition or objection, registration follows. An opposition can add a year or more, which is why clearance comes first.

As many as cover what you sell now and will plausibly sell in five years — and no more. There are 45 Nice classes (34 for goods, 11 for services). A clothing brand with an online shop, for instance, usually needs class 25 (clothing) and class 35 (retail services); a software business needs 9 and 42. You can file yourself at the UKIPO. The risk isn't the form; it's the specification and the search. Marks refused for conflict, or registered in classes that don't cover the business, are the commonest reason people end up paying twice. An advisory search before you file tells you.
